<<i have a 88 audi 90q and recently tried to remove the alternator. well
one of the bolts from the bracket snapped right off. >>
one of the lower pivot bolts [17mm], or an adjuster bolt [10-13mm] ? or the
bolt that holds the alt to the bracket?
<<i then decided to try to pry the alternator out and broke the damn thing
also. >>
how on earth would you PRY out an alternator? and to what avail? were you
hoping to snap the broken bolt off? sounds like a fast train from bad to
worse.. drilling it out or cutting it off and extracting the stud would
have been better ideas.
<< is this a common thing for these bolts to break like that? >>
if your car gets the winter salt bath it is. overnight soaking with
penetrating oil can help, heat can help [watch out for wires and other stuff
that burns, but if your email address is an indication you knew that].
<<my next mission is to take out the a/c condensor to get to one of the
bolts holding the alternator bracket in place.>>
i just replaced the alt on my 88 90 and you dont have to touch the ac pump
to get the alt out [if i remember right] - they are on different sides of
the motor and not at all attached.
<<is it hard to take out the condensor? >>
it looks like it is pretty buried and i had the whole nose offf.
<<i just ordered the manual but it wont be here for a couple of days.>>
id wait for it.
