I'd fully agree. Not only that. Even USB 1.1 has MUCH faster data tranfer
rates than Serial. (most laptops are
USB 1.1, I'd almost kill for one that's got onboard 2.0). It's possible
that USB 1.1 may support active data
transfer, i.e., while you drive.

Seems like going the HEX-USB route is probably the best thing. In several
years, the "old" laptop I might end up using it on probably won't have
that serial port.

Thanks for the input!

Thanks for the update. We ended up deciding to go with PASCO's PCMCIA
adaptor
(I'm sure that it's simply a relabled other commercial unit, although
they said specifically
that it's not Belkin's) as they will support it. Can't have a classroom
full of students waiting
around while I have laptops rebooting, and rebooting trying to get things
to work. Besides,
it's not really my $$$$, I don't teach in the town I live in.

We are switching to PASCO adaptors for the next school year,
but nonetheless, I wouldn't depend on those things to work
with HEX-COM.

I've been using the Quatech PCMCIA-serial adapter recommended by
Ross-Tech.
It works flawlessly with Hex-Com. I've not used it with other
devices.
Still it can be a minor PITA. I must shut-down the laptop to install
it.
And, since there is only one PCMCIA slot, I cannot have my wireless
network
card installed while using VAG-COM. Which means I can't access
on-line
resources while diagnosing.
With USB I could have as many devices installed as I could find use
for.
