I thought the sensor on the bell housing was a TDC sensor. I also assumed that the ECU could only vary timing around a base setting, factory established at 13BTDC. But it may be more sophisticated, and actually use the combination of dizzy hall sensor and TDC sensor to know and adjust exactly what the timing is. In this case, manually adjusting the timing would have no effect until you move far enough that the ECU can no longer pull it back.
