The last (my bad) Japanese car I owned was an 85 Nissan Pulsar but many of
my friends have new ones. The reason that I mentioned dents instead of
rust is because that is what I see a lot of on their newer cars. When I
painted my 87 5k last year, I found almost no dents to speak of. It is
also the first car that I have worked on where leaning on the fenders did
not cause them to cave in.

I agree that the American cars are no charm either. If we would get some
good full size German trucks over here, I'd ditch my Chevy in a heartbeat.
The one plus of the thinner metal is it saves a lot of weight. This is a
lot of what maked cars like the WRX fast.
