I have a 99.5 A4 1.8tq 5-spd. It is stock at
150hp/155tq. It DOES feel weak - merely adequate as a
transportation device. But $500 and an hour in a
tuner's shop and you have 200+hp and 240+tq. Even
more if you have a later model that the giac x-chip
will work in.
Reliability/longevity boils (no pun intended) down to
the treatment received by the owner. Arguably a
turbo-charged car is under more stress. But Audi did
a good job on the 1.8t and it will hold up well for a
long time, even if modified beyond original
specification. $1700 and you have 235hp/265tq. If
you have later model - $2500 buys you 260+hp/280+tq.
$4500 buys you 280hp/300tq. And these are reputable
kits that will last many thousands of miles. The
engine can handle that easily, and upwards of 400hp if
you have the dough for a custom setup.
If you stay on top any particular maintenance item
(timing belt for example) then it should go a long
long time.
don't know about the v6 as much, but it stands to
reason that a well maintained v6 will last longer than
a small strung out 4. Oh, your v6 can have 295
supercharged horses for $5k.
