Stephane.
I was toying with this too. In fact I am doing a custom stereo install in an avant right now, and would like to do this. Here is some info that may help - I just went and measured from a hatch..
With the panel removed, there are two triangles that are not equilateral and have the smallest side = 5"
The minimum depth on one side is 1.175" and tapers to a depth of 2.75" where the nomial depth is around 2".
I took one of the stock rear door speakers that has a depth of 2.25" 5" dia. and it does seem to fit even with the flange directly against the metal of the hatch. I expect another .25" to be gained when speaker is mounted in the panel.
So looks like you can get away with some 5" speakers that are not to deep without any cutting. The Hatch would make a great soundboard too and if one could find a 5" speaker with good low frequency characteristic I think this may work well - can't be very deep, or the speaker will bottom out in the hatch. Also, cant get much bigger than 5" even if cutting metal, because you have trunk latch mechanism that will likely interfere.
I think a set of rear door speakers would be a good fit and these old ITT speakers seem to punch out pretty well, and I'm sure newer technology will be even better.
Not to get off on a tangent, but the install I'm doing seems like it may be complicated and I'm trying to foreguess what the car buyer will be using for a stereo. He wants 2 or 3 power amps cascaded off of an EQ that is fed by the stereo. I need to find a good way to do a sub woofer - Rear cargo inside of the spare tire? Are there any kind of subs that can mount in the hatch as described above, something like a low profile sub/driver that will take advantage of the hatch panell as the sounding board?
Ben
[I have some really good but big Sony speakers that I want to put in my
avant. Has anyone put speakers in the lower part of the hatch (the part
that doesn't have glass, obviously)? If so, how did it work out? It
seems like there would be enough room for the speakers in there, but I
don't want to take it apart until I know for sure.
Thx
Stephane]
