I just had this problem, with nearly identical symptoms. The archives generally suggest this to be a fuel system problem. I troubleshooted the entire fuel system to no avail. Having spent enough time on it, I took it to a garage (it needed a tune-up anyway). It turned out to be a faulty distributor cap. I'd start there first, it's much easier to get at than the fuel check valve, and it will need to be replaced at some time anyway.
