For chassis upgrades, it's a good idea to upgrade to fr. disk brakes and 
beef up the suspension. But the aftermarket has been making these upgrades 
for 30-40 years, so the tech is out there.

Also the tech for motors is fairly impressive, considering the original 
motors were designed in 1937. For easy, no-brainer swaps with little or no 
modifications to car/tranny/etc, pick up the December issue of 'excellence', 
the Porsche magazine. There's an article about getting great h.p. from these 
motors.  Maybe the best source and engine builder is Jake Raby in No. 
Georgia.  His excellent web site is:

You can even buy very cheap replacement motors w/options like more h.p., 
EFI, etc. from B.A.P. and CB Performance.
