I don't know when the improvement was done, but that is not the problem now.
My wife runs a VW/Audi repair shop and sees a lot of the newer VWs, she
keeps bringing home horror stories of not the tensioner failing, but the
damn plastic waterpump impeller shaft breaking and ruining the t-belt
(since the t-belt runs the WP).
Her shop is recommending 60k serivce merely cause of the WP on those
engines, not the tensioner. So far they have seen failures as early as
37k, and lots around 70-90k. Worse case, trash the head, best case, you
overheat it just a little if you notice in time that the WP isn't workin.
