OK, I quickly becoming a CV interchange expert. One question I have - can
someone confirm the larger Audi inner CV (the one used in the front of 5k,
1C, S4, UrQ, 5cyl 2wd 80/90; approx 95-97mm across bolts center to center)
uses 10mm bolts to hold the CV to the drive flange. I'm pretty sure this
is the CV joint style I require to successfully fit the tranny I have into
my car. The smaller inner CV (4k, 4kQ, CGT, 80/90Q, 80/90 2wd 4cyl; 90 mm
across bolts center to center) uses an 8mm bolt to hold the CV on. Does
anyone know if the two fit onto the same size inner shaft? I.e. are the
inner splines on the CV the same between the two CV's. (That would be too
much to ask for, I know.)

I took apart the bad transmission, and it appears the pinion bearing
failed, as you can move the pinion around easily by hand. The ring gear
looks fine, bearings OK, too. The only other alternative (and a cheaper
one, I might add, as I won't have to buy new CV's or shafts) is to swap the
side gears containing the splines from one ring gear carrier to the
other. I can get the ring gear out of the new trans with the tranny in the
car (it comes out the drivers's side)
