Well my "hot rodded" 8v GTI is quite happy at it's rev limit of 8000
rpm. I am using heavier valve springs, but my engine (JH - 83 US GTI)
was solid lifter from the factory. I would think if the lifter bores
are the same you can likely just switch to solid lifter valves and
lifters.
I dug out my Rabbit Bentley manual. It only lists 40 mm and 34 mm
intake valves for 1980 to 1984. I think before 80 the engines were 1.6l
for gas plants. I don't know what valve size those where, but I would
bet 34 mm. This would mean either modifying your head for 40 mm or
getting custom 38 mm valves. Of course maybe there is some other weird
application out there you can get them from.
I have a spare KH head and a few sets of solid lifter valves from JH
engines if you want me to check fit anything. Sadly I can't think where
I have any solid lifters (or whatever he hell the purists want to call
them).
Now I think you will have to start over with your cam if you go this
route however as I believe the base circle will be quite different.
Good luck and let us know what you find out. If you want me to measure
anything from the parts I listed above let me know.
