01A questions

I'm looking at making a close ration box for a rally car. The ratios
available in the 90, 4K, and Coupe GT would lend themselves to a pretty
good gearbox. If the distance between the main shaft and counter shaft is
the same on all of the 01A (and 01E for that matter) then by welding the
gears you can move them. This box has an advantage that all of the gears
are independent from the shafts. On most Japanese front and rear drive
boxes, the counter shaft is one piece with all the gears on the shaft.
With the Audi box you could have individual gearsets made and mix those
with what is available for a good bit less than a custom box where
everything has to be made. Welded gears are a proven and much used process
in both Porsche gearboxes and many different front drive road race
applications.
Thanks, Dave.

What exactly are you trying to do? Welding gears may be impossible as they
are extremly hard steel. The steel around the weld will get brittle. Add a
ton of horsepower and that is not a good thing.
Even if you do successfully weld them, you just negated any heat treating
that was done on the gear.
