Actually not true, with quattro boxes, 1st gear is integral to the
mainshaft as well as second gear. third and fourth are together on another
shaft with only a few ratio pairs available. Fifth gear is the only truly
independent gear in those boxes.
Unless your speaking of front wheel drive boxes, in that case weld away and
pick up the pieces later.
