If nothing related has been touched recently, then it is likely an
electronic circuit failure.  Did anything else fail at the same time
(lights, indicators)?  If/when you remove the cluster, check for loose or
singed (blackened) connections.  It must either be a problem with the
"sender", the wiring harness or the tach itself.  [ECU?]
Btw, I have two spare instrument clusters that I am parting out: one from a
1989 100 and another from a 1990 200 turbo, if you might eventually need
one
of them.
