It should be a piece of cake. Just swap in the front strut/spring/hub
assemblies, keeping the '86 brakes since they are probably slightly
larger. Oopsie, that might mean getting some 16v scirocco rotors...
your choice, buy those versus having to open up, attach and bleed the
brakes from the '84.
As I recall, early coupes have little pie plate rotors, around 83-84
they are a bit bigger, and in '85 they are the same as the 4kq.
The rear could be an entire axle swap or just the stubs - depends on
what is in pieces already which is easiest. If you're gonna put in new
shoes, the four stub mount bolt will be exposed.
Since the rear brakes will have to be opened and bled anyway, I suppose
I'd suggest staying with the '84 calipers/rotors, and giving the
recipient of the car the "spare" '86 calipers with instructions on what
rotor to use someday.
Another random thought. You might only have to change the drums
themselves over in the rear. Take a look, I haven't bothered to look up
the shoes in TFA to see if they're the same size. The drum is the only
thing in the rear that is 4x100 vs. 4x108.
