Well first off, you can do anything you want to any car you want, but
sometimes it's a bit harder and more expensive, ;-) (old racing
saying...It's not the size of your motor that counts, it's the size of the
wallet that built the motor). You could theoretically tube frame the front
of the 5k and put the 1.8t in, but within reason I'd say for sure theres no
way you can mount any motor transverse in a 5k. Second though, why in the
name of Piech would you want to put the cheap POS 1.8t instead of a good
well built 5 cylinder? Don't mean to offend anybody, but the 1.8t engine is
IMHO only good for making boat anchors out of. I have had to rebuild a few
of them for excessive oil smoke with under 125,000miles on a well maintained
car. In every case the engine showed as much wear inside as what I normally
see in a car with over 200,000. Also there's the coil problems that seem to
have been mostly solved by now. If you are wanting to do power mods, well
heck I have nearly 500hp on a stock bottom end with over 200,000 miles on it
in my '87 5000tq. If your looking for fuel economy, well the money that you
would save by NOT doing this swap would pay for gas for a very long time.

There is no way to mount the motor in, totally different mounting designs.
Also there's no way to attach the motor to the wheels to make them turn. The
layout of the cars are not even remotely simmilar. The gearbox in a
transverse 1.8t has the axles running just under and in front of the engine,
where in the longitudinal 5k it's axles are about 18 inches behind the
engine. I don;t even know how to explain how different they are :-). The
thing is though, that Audi A4's have the same 1.8t engine mounted
longitudinally, so there is a possibility that that would work if you could
figure out how to bolt it to the transmission and like you said have fun
with the wiring.
