Broken clutch rod?

David, I have to say, the resolution of your second picture is quite bad. I
had a hard time discerning what exactly I was looking at. If there are
cracks in your firewall, I suspect they would be obvious. When it's dark,
try shining a bright light under the dash, around where the shaft penetrates
the firewall and have a look under the hood. If there is a major crack you
will see the light seeping through.
On my '87 4kq, the pedal squeaks a bit, but it is neither lighter or heavier
than my coupe (which is an '82, and cable clutch). I would suggest that
either the pressure plate is loosing it's ability to "spring", the slave
cylinder is giving up the ghost, or a combination of both. Then again,
maybe the shaft just tired after all these years. Good hunting and good
luck.

Dan

clutch is stiffer than the one in my former 98 Passat, but nothing compared
to the HD clutch that was put in my 5+5 back when I was in HS (it used to
cause my calf to twitch at long lights). Should the clutch be fairly heavy
in a Coupe GT? Or very light? I don't see any obvious cracks or other signs
of firewall problems. I took a closer pic:
