Saying Goodbye

I'm sorry to see you go, Dee - I've always enjoyed your posts about Baby and
the enthusiasm you showed for your car. I understand your position, though -
there comes a point where it is not economical to keep these wonderful cars
unless you can do the repairs yourself and save the labour costs. I venture
to guess that most members of this list with old Audis do their own repairs.
Good luck with whatever car you choose to replace Baby - hey, it may be
another Audi and you'll be telling us about Baby II for the next eight years
or so!

P.S. Your stalling issue sounds like it involves the AC compressor/ idle
control system. Using the heater should not stall the car if you keep the AC
off. Having said that, it's no fun to own a car you don't have confidence
in.
Good luck!

Subject: Saying Goodbye
I've decided to donate Baby to charity or trade her in for a new car. The
problems just keep building up and she is becoming increasingly unreliable.
The air conditioning issues were possible to overcome but now I realize that
the entire climate control is in question. It automatically comes on when I
start the car and if I don't click it off immediately, the car stalls. If I
have it off and drive around a bit, then click it on again, the car stalls.
Originally I was told the air conditioning condenser or compressor (I forgot
which) exploded (my mechanics word). The part (which can't be found at any
discount parts place) is supposedly $1600.00 (from Audi) plus labor. I am
basically worn out. I've put so much money into this car, I probably could
have had a brand new Audi for all the repair costs I've paid. Water under
the bridge now though.
I could deal with a lot, even lack of AC but I believe now that the climate
control won't be able to create heat w/o stalling the car this winter. Plus,
now that its started to stall, I have lost confidence in it. I drive around
waiting for the other shoe to drop.
Anyway, I have set of winter wheels with snow tires to sell and before I
put them on eBay, I thought I'd mention it here. They are OE 15" wheels with
Hakkapellittas. Can't check the wear at the moment because I'm at work, but
will later. I'll need to look into the whole shipping issue, certainly it
would be better if someone could pick them up in the New Jersey area. If any
is interested, let me know.
I just wanted to say thank you once again for all the help and advice I've
received here over the years. You guys have really been so generous with
your time. I've appreciated it, more than you know.
