Metric hardware sources?

Best bet there is probably Maryland Metric or McMaster.

McMaster's catalog pages do a very good job of explaining materials, 
benefits of different designs, etc on many items, ranging from sheets 
of aluminum to bearings to clamps to hardware bits.  A layman such as 
myself who doesn't know the first thing about bearings could walk up 
to their page on bearings and come away with the right one for the 
job.  I've always been impressed with the amount of information 
provided...

I think Maryland Metric probably has the most extensive range of 
sizes and grades.
