Bernie Benz has written up at least once a guide to aligning a car 
with basic, cheap materials/tools.  If you search on his name and 
'alignment' in the archives, you'll probably turn it up.  It probably 
should go in the knowledgebase, if it isn't there already.

One caution- quattros can be very fussy about their alignment; it 
needs to be as dead close to center of the range Audi specifies. 
Simply "within the range" isn't good enough.

I honestly think today's alignment machines are superior to any 
hand-taken measurements, but each to his own!
