You mean the clutch lockout switch? Those showed up in the early
seventies, along with a starter lockout on some cars that wouldn't engage
the starter if the seat belt wasn't' fastened.
Most of the early cars had a pedal right over or near the starter, to the
right of the gas pedal. My 1941 Willys Jeep had the start pedal in the
middle of the floorboard, nothing but a straight rod that ran right into
the starter motor.
