CV boot fix on 5kcstq

Thanks for the info--
I believe I'll be going with the split boot for now, mostly because it took so
much time to get the stupid thing installed, on top of the time spent yanking
the axle out of the car only to find out I have the wrong replacement, and
trying to track down another axle or replacement boot.
I'll be keeping an eye on that axle though, and will try another solution if it
or the boot fails. One good thing about the split boot is that it can be
opened for inspection/regreasing and reclosed without damaging it.
I did take the time to clean the bearings out and work some new grease into
them. Hopefully this fix will last awhile, the joint wasn't actually giving me
problems yet when I removed it.
Okay, next silly question- The Bentley indicates that the ring gasket that goes
between the inner CVJ and the tranny flange must be replaced. Is this
absolutely necessary? I have no idea where to get one- I assume I'll have to
cut one for myself - out of what material should such a gasket be made?
Thanks!!
