1. Low liftover trunk on '85-87.
2. Third brake light on '86-87
3. '86-87 models denoted by "CS" as opposed to '84-85 "S" models.
4. '84's are lighter. Lighter bumpers and lights. Not much, maybe 50-75lbs?
5. '84's use a different style of linkage for the center diff lock. Not interchangable with '85-87, but not a concern if you never replace the tranny.
6. Brown was the most common interior color early, and grey or black later.
7. Leather was an option since '85, not std in any.
8. Trip computer was optional since '85.
9. Heated seats were an option since '85, not std in any.
10. There was a special 4000 Quattro in '86. It was called the CE, or Commemorative Eddition. It had Red Kodiak leather seats and door panel inserts. White exterior with matching white wheels. Same drivetrain, etc. They were rare then, the are VERY rare now.

My daily driver is an '87, Saphire blue/Gray cloth. No trip computer, no leather, no seat heat. They all have sunroofs, and sport seats. They all share the JT 2.22L 115 HP 5-cyl and 016 5-speed trans. As stated, the ratio's are different in '84.
