Well, since any options will usually be listed in a for sale ad (and 
won't be on every car from that year), I guess all that really matters 
are the differences that span the whole year.  And there, I'd say two 
things, basically - one is the 84 vs 85-87 major difference, with the 84 
having the old school "boxy" looking bumpers and trim (and front quarter 
lights) - and, as I said, lower overall gearing.  The 85-87's have the 
sleeker looking "wraparound" trimmings.  The other factor is that 
usually later in a models history, more little bugs have been worked out 
by the manufacturer, meaning if I were looking for a 4kq, I'd be more 
inclined towards a nice '87.
