Not to impugn the range of good advice and probably hard earned 
experience above, but wait a minute... what about diagnosing it first? 
I can't remember if it was an intermittent problem, but a test device 
wired to the signal "to" the LRR will tell you for sure whether it's the 
switch or the relay next time it happens.

Am I suggesting you get stuck somewhere without all those devices 
(including headlights)?  No, carry a nice heavy jumper for the LRR to 
get yourself home in style.  Whichever device broke, the jumper will 
bypass the problem.
