Tiptronic transmission

David-
Sorry, but DSG is NOT a slushbox.
DSG IS a manual transmission- it has two electronically engaged
clutches and gears like a "real" manual gearbox. Two gears are engaged
continually, but only one clutch is engaged. This way, gears can be
changed very very quickly.
DSG does not drive like an automatic at all- very quick and smooth
shifts, engine braking off-throttle. No coasting like an automatic.
Very smooth kickdowns- no skipping of gears, they are downshifted
sequentially, which is a little odd. Slight hesitation off the line in
forward and reverse gears as the "clutch is let out."
You might be confusing the tiptronic/steptronic/geartronic type of
automatic transmission with DSG. DSG has a lot more in common with
Ferrari F1, Alfa Selecspeed and BMW SMG.
Audi's DSG isn't flawless- while I worked at a dealership, I heard
from the service writers that there were some complaints about the
gearbox in some of the A3s- one guy had his replaced with less than
500 miles on the car.
