$40 -- $28 oil filters?

I have a '00 A6 4.2, which takes the same filter as your '02 S6. You
definitely want to use the "32 gallon" OE filter (part # 077115561G) or the
"generic" Mann (part # 735/2) or Mahle equivalent. These filters can be had
for $20 or so from places like ECS <http://www.ecstuning.com/> Tuning or
Autohaus AZ <http://www.autohausaz.com/> . The smaller filters you see are
for the V6 motors only, not the V8's. In terms of filter changes, not
changing a $20 filter every oil change on a $60k car seems like a false
economy. Not worth the risk to save a few bucks. Also make sure you are
using a good quality synthetic oil for your changes. I use Castrol Syntec
5W40 (what Audi uses), but there are other Audi approved 5W40 grades out
there also. The service chart calls for 10k mile oil change intervals, but
most have elected to do 5k intervals to be on the safe side.

HTH.

Subject: $40 -- $28 oil filters?

Hello all,

I'm the happy owner of a 2002 S6 Avant, just off factory warranty. So

I'm about to do my first oil change.

I've looked around and there seem to be two kinds of oil filters for

this beast. The true OE $40 ($28 at places like GPR and Blau) variety

that looks to be about a foot long, and the $8 variety (at Blau, again)

that is WAY smaller.

So what's the real deal here? Anyone have experience? Insight? If it

put this 32 gallon** filter on, can I change it every 3rd oil change?

I don't mind spending it if its important, but this seems excessive.

And I object to wasting money (hey, that's a really good bottle of

Chateauneuf du Papes, right?)

Grant

** disclaimer. Its probably less than 32 gal
