I ship rims and tires (mounted and not) all of the time. Rims can go in
boxes, but often I place 2 together, facing each other. They're separated
by a layer of light foam "paper" and cardboard. So picture: "rim face,
foam, cardboard, foam, rim face." They're secured by metal or nylon
shipping strapping (you need tools for this), although packaging tape should
work. I often use cardboard wedges to protect the edges where the strapping
gets tightened on the back edge of the rim. Alternatively, you can pack
them into boxes but are then more likely to be charged "dimensional weight."
I would expect a packing store (like mailboxes, etc.) could provide the
necessary materials and labor. They'd probably pack them into
individual boxes and fill with foam peanuts. When I ship rims (in or out of
boxes), I strap 2 rims or tape 2 boxes together... so 4 rims are only 2
packages. More economical (and less likely to loose one). I've shipped
mounted 18" Corvette rims this way and still be under any overweight
restrictions. I suppose if you were shipping a set of 24" spinners with
mounted tires, putting them on a pallet and shipping LTL common carrier
would be the most economical.
If anyone around Binghamton, NY needs things like this shipped, feel free to
ask for assitance!
