Water in oil/brown smoke

My best guess would definately be the Head gasket, but please don't let it
scare you..... it is really not that big of a deal!

1a. have a bently manual? if not, GET ONE! you'll find them on the sites
below as well as ebay from time to time..... someone on the list may have
one you can borrow.

1b. everything I mention down there is just an overview!!!! there may be a
thing or two missing so work per the bently.... religiously!!!

1c. there are several places that sell the HG's for a very reasonable
price..... here are a couple that I deal with every day:
sjmautotechnik<http://catalog.eautopartscatalog.com/sjm/022805/wizard.jsp?partner=sjm&clientid=sjm&baseurl=http://www.sjmauto.com/&cookieid=1OJ0JG7B41OJ0JGFJZ&year=1986&make=AU&model=4000-Q-001&category=A&part=Cylinder+Head+Gasket>

and: German auto parts <http://www.germanautoparts.com/main.php>
now, G A P's site is horrible, so you'll want to call them.... very
reasonable.

(NO AFFILIATION just a satisfied customer)

2. drain your fluids
3. put engine to TDC (top dead center) check flywheel AND cam gear markings
4. detach exhaust downpipe from main exhaust
5. loosen steering pump tension and remove belt
6. remove valve cover
7. if you have fuel lines crossing over the head to the fuel pressure
regulator (attached to drivers sind block) remove those.
8. remove bumper then front clip (upper/lower crossmember ) (makes acess a
whole lot easier)
9. remove timing belt cover
10. remove cam gear
11. remove rear timing belt cover
Now! here is where you make a big decision..... H2O pump and tention/idler
pully are now in reach. you should replace them as well as the timing belt
upon reassembly
12.remove all hoses from IM and Head and label accordingly (as well as
anything else attached to you head and intake Manifold (IM) that will
impeade the head from being raised up) ie. air box, injectors/lines.....
13. Loosen the head bolts (there is a head bolt installation order you MUST
follow... and I follow the same order for "removal" as to not create
unecessary stresses on the head) that order is in the bentley as well as
with your new Head Gasket.

Now, another decision... after lifting the head up.... or up and out (with
all of the manifolds and downpipe attached) you will checking the deck
(contacting surface of head) for scratches and or anything that may shorten
the livespan of the HG. Most will have the head "decked" or "miilled" which
is having a small layer taken off by a decking machine to make the surface
perfect. if it isn't in bad condition and you are not wanting to go that
route, a mild cleaning of debris on either contacting surface is suggested.

now that is about it besides torquing the head per the spec and reassembly.
I've gotten this process down to about 2 1/2 hours. Being your first time It
will take you considerably longer..... but remember.... as you come up with
questions, we are here for you to ask!!! Good luck and keep us posted!!!
