Now you do.  It has worked for me.  Frequently the plastic clutch pilot 
tool supplied with many clutch kits will work once you pry the ring out of 
the top.

Alternatively you can use a slide hammer with an internal grip attachment 
(rented/loaned at many FLAPS.)
