hard starting with no dashboard lights

My 95 A6 is getting a little harder to start.
Until recently it started fine.

I noticed tonight because it was so dark that when the engine
is cranking but not starting there are absolutely no lights.

I tried several times and the time it started the lights came on
the dash while I was cranking the engine.

What does anyone suppose is the problem.
