hard starting with no dashboard lights

Try not turning the key quite so hard - in other words just enough to 
engage the starter, but not turned fully.  This may allow the rest of the 
circuits to engage.  If you have trouble doing this, turn the key all the 
way, then slowly let off your turning pressure so the key turns ever so 
slightly back to the left, if the car starts there, yep it's the ignition 
switch.
