Early headlight electrical problems (CGT)

I think just about _ALL_ 1970s abd 1980s Audis suffered with the low beam
contact in the back of the steering column light switch. I really don't
know how many times I've stripped one of these switches, bent the contact a
little to compensate for the contact it touches melting its way into the
plastic, and reassembled it, running out of available fingers on the way.

Do it inside a large transparent plastic bag, to catch any spring-loaded
parts that make a break for the border.

The apparent intermittancy is temperature-related - a cold switch will make
contact, but once it's carried current for a while an off/on cycle will
produce the problem.
