Datapoint:  I haven't mentioned it directly before, but I paid $1,500 for my '87.  It had a few little things wrong (I've listed them in other posts) but I was willing to give the owner his asking price, no haggling, instead of whittling him down (which a few other buyers were trying to do) because of the low mileage and otherwise very good condition (48,402 miles.)

The nearly instantaneous engine start in freezing weather was impressive and went a long way toward sealing the deal for me.  Barely had time to let go of the key, and it settled instantly into a smooth idle.
