Never respond positively to "I suppose you know why I am stopping you". This
is just fishing to see if you will admit to some other violation. Always be
mystified.
I learned this the hard way. I was driving a '78 Z, that I had bought from
someone's garage. Being in a rush, I hadn't gotten a new inspection sticker. I
was pulled over and the understanding cop just gave me a warning. 4 Miles later
I was stopped again. I responded to the "question" by saying I had just
gotten a warning and was taking it to an inspection station. His response "Second
offense, you're sending me fishing. (I understand that town kicks back to the
cops) That's a $1,000.00 ticket". Then he had the car towed.
