Gonna take a guess and say you have the wrong fuel pump relay.  One for a 
VW Fox fits in the same location and works fine -- until it tries to guess 
redline, which of course is a different number of ignition pulses for a 
5-cylinder than it is with 4.  I had a friend with an incorrect relay like 
that, did the same thing.
