There are three hoses/pipes: one brake, 2 gas (one to the FI, and 
a return line). 

The leak could have been brake fluid if he had his foot on the 
brake while starting the car.  But yes, the odor should be easy 
to identify.   Smell the fuel pump nozzle next time you get gas. 
Open the brake fluid reservoir and take a sniff.  As my English 
teacher used to say, "Compare and contrast."

The "brown" color may be rust from a pipe which is rusted 
through, which is where you will find the leak. :(
