Rich-
With SS lines of the unsheathed type at least, you must replace them
due to the possibility of abrasion under the sheathing from dirt
getting into the SS braid.

The other thing that has been a rather hot topic today is the
possibility of catastrophic failure of SS lines if you do something
stupid, like hang the brake caliper by the line- SS lines do not like
this at all.

It's pretty common practice, to my knowledge.
