Sounds like you didn't spring for AAA Plus which in my neck of the woods
(AAA Carolinas) gets you a free 100 mile tow. Otherwise you get less than
5 miles, or a tow to the responding service provider. It's only like $25
($15 extra for each extra person) more than the standard, as you can see
one tow will eat up that savings, and you get a lot more stuff included as
well. I just looked at the AAANNE website, and apparently you have to be a
member for a year and have less than 2 services within that year in order
to qualify for AAA Plus. I guess you have to prove you are not driving a
derelict before they commit to the better service.
To answer you last question, probably not. It costs around $50 just for a
local tow around here. So $72 for a 40 mile trip doesn't sound too
unreasonable. It's $3 a mile now apparently for the regular members (at
all three AAA's I checked: SNE, NNE, and Carolinas.)
Regarding Subaru cupholders, I had a 91 Legacy, it didn't really matter how
cold it kept your carbonated beverage, as all the vibration from the flimsy
holder shook out the fizz long before it could get hot even without the AC
assisted can (because a 20oz bottle won't fit) cooling.
