Even my mechanic is baffled

I posed a question last weekend regarding the check engine light on my
'99.5 A4 Avant 1.8T. To recap: it came on and the engine ran really
roughly because of a misfire. I replaced the ignition control module
which solved most of the misfiring, and the car got me back home (300
miles from where I was at the time) with no problems, even though
sometimes there was still a slight misfire.

Last week my mechanic took a look at the car. Pulling the codes
confirmed that there was still a misfire on cylinder No. 2. He changed
out the ignition control module again and tested the coilpacks and even
swapped them around; still the misfire. After replacing the spark plug
the misfire was still there. He even had the fuel injectors tested;
their spray patterns were good and the misfire was still there.

He's still wondering why, after testing/replacing all those components,
there's still a misfire on No. 2. He's doing some more looking into the
problem, but suggested I ask y'all to see if you have any insight.
Fortunately the car is driveable; you almost have to try (lug the
engine around 2,000 RPM) to get it to misfire. But any ideas any of you
have regarding why my car is still misfiring would be greatly
appreciated.

Thanks,
Mike
