gas tank replacement

so what actually are the symptoms of this fuel tank dilemma everyone
is now speaking of... my 87 4kq is suffering what seems like bad fuel
pump problems.... its stranded me a few times only to restart and run
fine after a few minutes. i did find a burned out fuel pump relay
once...new bosch pump goes in tomorrow (Ouch btw $$$) but id like to
know if im polluting pumps...
