gas tank replacement and fix for 4000's

No, you aren't poluting them. It actually starves them. If you put on a new pump, and it get noisy right away, you have a plugged "sock". Judging by the fact that is starts after a little while, I'd say that may be a step in the right direction. Does the car seem to lose power or buck before dying?

Shawn and Matt have both fixed their cars, as have I. You don't have to follow it to the letter, of course. It's more to give you an idea what you are dealing with, as the tank has no windows on it :(
If you do decide to fix it, and plan on keeping it on the road for a while, I'd also recommend coating the inside with "kreme". It comes in a kit and is available at motorcycle repair shops.
