This has been my experience too, with various dealers. I suspect the $40
or so people have been quoted may also include a minimum labor charge for
pulling the radio out of the car to get the radio serial number.  Last
time I needed a code, the dealer gave it to me over the phone.  I now
always put the code directly on the radio with an oil marker pen, theft
of 10+ year old cassette decks just isn't a big worry anymore.
