Fail-Safe mode on 100

First let me say thank you all so much for your help, I have now solved 
every audi problem except the radiator and blower motor. However I came 
across another issue I thought I should bring up. My audi has been 
shifting hard, and I havent been able to engage Sport mode or use 
cruise control since I received the car. I was looking through the 
manual, and learned that it appears to be in fail safe mode. Anyone 
know what are some of the causes of this? And what can be done to reset 
it or repair it. This tranny is about a year old!
