Changing the timing belt - timing?

George,
You have found the correct spot, but you still need the tool. It is a threaded device that
goes in there and has a chamferred tip on it that engages a hole in one of the pork-chops.
This locks the crankshaft at TDC #1 AND provides a hold while you undo the really tight
crankshaft sprocket bolt. I hate this answer, but I am going to give it anyway. Get a
manual. There are many steps in this process and some important torque figures. The
camshafts are also held in place with......another special tool. The sprockets are then
taken off of the now immobilized cam-shafts. The ID of those sprockets are a taper-fit on
the shafts, and need to be reset to account for any stretch of the belt. It sounds a bit
like hokus-pokus (sp), and one respected and a well known quattro shop here in the Twin
Cities says its bull and does it without the tools.
My 1995 90 ran considerably better after the timing belt job done with the tools, leading me
to believe that the sprockets could have been slipped, and after I realigned them, it was
now "in-time" and was therefore running better. But those little mo-fackys were so tight
that I doubt they could ever have slipped. I don't know.
Hey, another place to look is www.12v.org. It is either in there, or somewhere in our
archives that somebody wrote a many-paged detailed description on how to do the V6-12V
timing belt change, but it doesn't really say anything that isn't in the manual.

Once again I appeal to the group to clear up my confusion.
Patient: '94 Audi 90 2.8 L AAH eng. Quattro
To find and hold TDC the Bentley CD leads me to what they call the CKP to
determine TDC. This appears to be a a plasic sensor on the driver's side of
the engine, above the oil pan, behind the oil filter body, and below the
engine mount. When I remove this and look inside, I see the bottom of a
connecting rod and part of the crankshaft. Where on this is the TDC mark? Am I
looking in the wrong hole?
TIA
Cheers
George
