It's tough sometimes, but I think the key is to first clean the inside 
of teh flanges, then slowly tighten everything while jiggling the parts 
around to make sure everything is aligned nicely.  Then get everything 
good and really tight.

Also it does seem that the exact shape and construction of those 
"donuts" varies, hopefully that isn't a problem.
