Ditto...this happened on my '87 5kCSTQA a couple of months ago. Seemed like the whole front end was a out ready to come off. The bulge in the tire wasn't even that big, but what a ruckus!

inspect your tire for delam'd belts and unusual wear on the tread faces...this JUST happened to me on my VW....had a pocket in the sidewall from broken belts and boy o boy was the tread all squished together.
