You asked: "So, when you buy a rebuilt half-shaft, what are you getting
besides new
boots and clean grease? When I changed my boots, I cleaned the joints,
carefully inspected the balls and races for defects and found none, then
repacked them. I believe that raxles.com sells half-shafts with brand-new
joints, but if you just get a "rebuilt" joint, then what are you getting
that is any better than the core you're sending back?"
I've made exactly this point many times since I joined this list, to
little or no avail, and even to some resistance. MOST rebuilt axles
seem to be rebooted and sprayed with the color of the day. I've even
gotten some "better" remans that they forgot to grease. I occasionally
use a local rebuilder for CVs that are NLA, such as early 911/912s and
914s. His are ground and fitted with oversize innards. They're NOT
cheap, but make otherwise dead cars alive again. John
