4 hours of repair and $500 later ...

Cat,

Kneale is correct about the Waste Gate Frequency Valve (WGFV) having
nothing to do with the lack of power to the fuel pump. I am trying to
recall if it can have any
effect like acting like a giant vacuum leak (which would shut down
your car), but I don't think it will. Output tests will test the WGFV,
but you need to be in a pretty
quiet location to hear it buzz. If you're able to help your husband,
having your hand
resting on the WGFV while running the output test is a much surer
method of verifying that it works. There is another output test trick
that works (if it's dark out),
which is to wire an LED to the leads that trigger the WGFV. If the
valve is being triggered, the LED will blink rapidly. It's possible to
see it driving if you make the leads long enough to run from the WGFV
to say, under a windsheild wiper. Then you can verify function as long
as it's dark enough out to see the LED.

Now, I think that the most likely cause of your car's shutdown is
probably the Fuel Pump Relay. Test to see if there is any power to the
fuel pump itself (i.e. AT the fuel pump). If there isn't, if you can
lift the fuse block out of it's little house on the fender, try
triggering the fuel pump and see if there is 12V out the output side
of the
relay (you'll have to use the Bentley for pin-outs, my Bentleys are in
a storage unit, I just moved, too). If there isn't then it's likely
the relay. If there is, then there's a break in the wiring between the
fuseblock and the pump, which'll have to be traced and found. There is
nothing Audi special about this kind of repair (rare), but you'll need
to find someone experienced in auto electrical systems to trace it.
Again, this isn't a special Audi thing, so the # of shops open up for
this. But, I'd bet it's the relay, nonetheless, which is a plug in the
new relay and go repair. Take the Part Number right off of your old
relay to find get a new one. Try The Parts Connection
http://www.thepartsconnection.com which I know has the relay, AND he's
on the Pacific coast, which means the relay could easily arrive in a
day. He's (Ron) on the vendor list, and has helped many a lister,
including myself out of many a jam. Don't be afraid to ask him
questions. He's usually VERY helpful.

HTH, good luck!
