My own fuel pump saga- '84 4kq- (and some fixes)

I've been following the fuel pump relay discussion for
awhile and thought I'd chime in with a somewhat similar
problem that I've been having...

My 4000s Quattro was doing this thing where it would just
blow the fuel pump fuse at random times and it got to where
I replaced the fuse with a circuit breaker so that I
wouldn't have to carry three packs of fuses everywhere. I
wouldn't really recommend this because eventually some of
the wires melted because it would trip and then reset,
letting the overload through again...

Nevertheless, with the circuit breaker in it I would do
some of the same things, like jiggle the fuse box or leave
it sticking out or jiggle other wires and sometimes I would
think that I'd have it solved but it would start doing it
again. Finally, after replacing the fuel pump, relays, fuel
filter, etc., I took it in and they figured out that the
wires going into the oxygen sensor, which happened to be on
the same circuit, were broken and would ground out at
random times.

So that was fixed and the a year later it started doing it
again. I took it in and in exchange for my $400 they
replaced the fuel pump and repaired the fuse box. And the
car ran for about a week before it started doing it again.

Now it's been parked for several months because I don't
really feel like spending tons of cash on something as
silly as fuses just so I can maybe figure out what's wrong
with it, much less $400 to have it last a year or even a
week. I'm sure the pump is fine and I've gone over every
wire to and from the fuse box. It seems to be one of those
mysterious hauntings. I've always thought it funny that the
fuel pump circuit is #13 and that's the one that gives us
all the most trouble.

Anyway, that's what was wrong with mine, although mine was
actually blowing fuses, not just cutting out. And also if
anyone's had any similar experience with things that would
blow that fuse, I would appreciate hearing about it. This
seems like a pretty sharp crowd.
